An authentic 17th-century Hungarian 1 Denar struck in 1619, during the reign of Matthias II (Mátyás II), King of Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor.
The coin was struck at the historic Kremnica (Kremnitz) Mint, identified by the K-B mintmark. Kremnica was one of the most important minting centers in the Kingdom of Hungary and produced coinage for centuries.
Design
Obverse: The traditional Hungarian coat of arms, with the K-B mintmarks appearing on either side. The surrounding Latin inscription identifies Matthias II and his royal and imperial titles.
Reverse: A crowned Madonna and Child, accompanied by the Latin inscription PATRONA HVNGA, referring to the Virgin Mary as the “Patroness of Hungary.” The date 1619 is incorporated into the design.
Historical Background
Matthias II ruled during a turbulent era in Central European history, when the Habsburg monarchy faced religious conflicts, political struggles and the continuing Ottoman threat.
This small denar was part of the everyday monetary system of the Kingdom of Hungary and circulated more than 400 years ago. Its combination of the Hungarian coat of arms and the Madonna and Child reflects both the political identity and religious traditions of Habsburg-era Hungary.
