A beautiful early 17th-century Hungarian 1 Denar struck in 1615 during the reign of Matthias II (Mátyás II), King of Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor.
The coin was minted at Kremnica (Kremnitz), indicated by the K-B mintmark. Kremnica was one of the most important historic mints in the Kingdom of Hungary and remains famous for its long tradition of coin production.
Design
Obverse: The Hungarian coat of arms with the K-B mintmark flanking the shield, surrounded by the Latin legend identifying Matthias II and his royal and imperial titles.
Reverse: A crowned Madonna and Child, seated upon a crescent, with the Latin inscription PATRONA HVNGAR, meaning “Patroness of Hungary.” The date 1615 appears in the surrounding legend.
Historical Background
Matthias II ruled Hungary during a complicated period in Central European history, when the Habsburg monarchy faced continuing religious and political tensions as well as the ongoing Ottoman threat.
This small denomination was part of everyday commerce in the Kingdom of Hungary more than 400 years ago. Its combination of the Hungarian coat of arms and the Madonna and Child reflects the strong political and religious traditions of the Habsburg-era Hungarian kingdom.
