A genuine early 17th-century Hungarian 1 Denar (Dénár) dated 1613, issued during the reign of Matthias II, King of Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor.
This small hammered coin was struck at the historic Kremnica (Kremnitz) Mint, identified by the KB mintmark. Kremnica was one of the principal mints of the Kingdom of Hungary and produced Hungarian coinage for centuries.
Design
Obverse: The traditional Hungarian coat of arms, incorporating the Árpád stripes and double cross, with the KB mintmark dividing the arms. The surrounding Latin inscription identifies Matthias II and his imperial and royal titles.
Reverse: A crowned Madonna and Child, seated upon a crescent and holding a cross. The Latin legend PATRO · HVNGA · 1613 refers to the Virgin Mary as the “Patroness of Hungary.”
