A genuine early 17th-century Hungarian 1 Denar (Dénár) struck in 1618 during the reign of Matthias II (Mátyás II), King of Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor.

The coin was struck at Kremnica (Kremnitz), identified by the K-B mintmark. Kremnica was one of the most important historic mints of the Kingdom of Hungary and has a coinage tradition dating back to the medieval period.

Design

Obverse: The Hungarian coat of arms, incorporating the traditional Árpád stripes and double cross, with the K-B mintmark identifying the Kremnica mint.

Reverse: A crowned Madonna and Child, seated upon a crescent and holding a cross. The surrounding Latin inscription refers to Mary as “Patroness of Hungary” (Patrona Hungar[iae]), reflecting the important religious symbolism found on Hungarian coinage of the period.

Historical Background

Matthias II ruled during a turbulent period in Central European history. Hungary was divided between Habsburg and Ottoman spheres of influence, while religious and political tensions continued throughout the region.

This small denar would have been used in everyday commerce more than 400 years ago, making it a tangible survivor from the Habsburg-era Kingdom of Hungary.
