Historical Background:
Magnentius came to power in AD 350 after rebelling against Emperor Constans, the son of Constantine the Great. He controlled much of the Western Roman Empire for several years but faced opposition from Emperor Constantius II in the East.
The two sides eventually fought a major conflict at the Battle of Mursa Major in AD 351. Magnentius suffered a decisive defeat and was eventually forced into retreat. In AD 353, after further military losses, Magnentius took his own life at Lugdunum.
Coins of Magnentius are an interesting part of Roman history because they were struck during this period of civil war and political instability. His coinage is also notable for its connection to the growing influence of Christianity within the Roman Empire.
