Historical Background:
Magnentius came to power in AD 350 after leading a revolt against Emperor Constans, the son of Constantine the Great. He quickly gained control of much of the Western Roman Empire and established himself as emperor.
His claim to the throne was challenged by Constantius II, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire. Their struggle resulted in a major civil war. Magnentius was defeated at the Battle of Mursa Major in AD 351, one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the 4th century.
After additional military defeats, Magnentius retreated westward. In AD 353, facing the loss of his remaining territory, he took his own life at Lugdunum.
The Lugdunum mint attribution makes this coin particularly interesting, as Magnentius ultimately met his end in the same city. His coinage was produced during a fascinating period of Roman civil conflict and political change.
