Why 1922 Is an Important Lincoln Cent Year
The 1922 Lincoln cent has an unusual place in the series because no Lincoln cents were produced at Philadelphia or San Francisco that year. Denver was the sole mint producing cents.
The year is also famous among Lincoln cent collectors because some 1922-D dies developed problems with the D mint mark. This resulted in several varieties, including weak-D examples and the famous 1922 No D cents.
The regular 1922-D is collectible in its own right, while the various weak-D and No-D varieties can carry substantial additional premiums. PCGS specifically cautions collectors to distinguish between the normal D, weak D, and the rare No-D varieties.
The Lincoln Wheat Cent
The Lincoln cent was introduced in 1909 and was designed by Victor David Brenner. The original Wheat reverse, showing two wheat stalks surrounding the denomination and inscriptions, remained in use through 1958.
This 1922-D example comes from an important period in the early history of the series and is a desirable addition to a collection of Lincoln Wheat cents.
