The Story of Nellie Cashman
Nellie Cashman (1844–1925) was one of the remarkable women of the American frontier. Born in County Cork, Ireland, she came to North America as a young woman and eventually made her way west, where she built an extraordinary life in the mining towns and boomtowns of the American West and Alaska.
Cashman became known for her business ability and adventurous spirit. In 1872, she and her mother moved to Pioche, Nevada, a booming silver-mining town, where they opened a boarding house. Nellie later operated boarding houses and restaurants in several frontier communities, including Tombstone, Arizona.
Her adventures eventually took her north to the Klondike Gold Rush. Cashman traveled over the Chilkoot Pass to Dawson City, where she opened a restaurant and also pursued mining. She later continued her life in Alaska, including time in Fairbanks during its early gold-rush period.
But Cashman was remembered for more than business and mining. She became well known for her generosity and humanitarian efforts, particularly toward people in need in the rugged frontier communities where she lived.
Nellie Cashman's life represents the determination, independence, and adventurous spirit that helped define the American West.
