The Story of Buffalo Bill Cody

William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846–1917) lived a remarkable life that became closely associated with the American West.

Over the course of his life, Cody worked as a Pony Express rider, buffalo hunter, Army scout, guide, soldier, performer, and showman. His skill as a buffalo hunter earned him the famous nickname “Buffalo Bill.” According to the Library of Congress, Cody reportedly killed more than 4,000 buffalo during an 18-month period while supplying meat to workers building the Kansas Pacific Railroad.

Cody eventually transformed his frontier experiences into entertainment. In 1883 he launched Buffalo Bill's Wild West, a traveling show that brought his version of the American frontier to audiences throughout the United States and Europe. The show became an international sensation and helped create the enduring popular image of the American West.

His life included many chapters — from frontier work and military scouting to performing and promoting the Western lifestyle to audiences around the world.

A Morgan Dollar and an American Legend

The pairing of this 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar with Buffalo Bill Cody makes this an especially appealing piece for collectors interested in the history and personalities of the American West.

The timing is particularly interesting. Buffalo Bill's Wild West began in 1883, only four years before this Morgan dollar was minted. By 1887, Cody's fame was spreading far beyond the American frontier, and his Wild West show had become an international attraction. In fact, his show performed in London in 1887 as part of the celebrations surrounding Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

The Morgan dollar does not have a documented personal connection to Buffalo Bill Cody. Instead, the original presentation pairs an authentic period American silver coin with the story of one of the most famous personalities associated with the Old West.

Original Presentation

The Morgan dollar remains in its original presentation card and sleeve, accompanied by the Buffalo Bill Cody historical material and stamp shown in the photographs.

Keeping the original presentation intact adds another dimension to the collectible, making it more than simply a loose Morgan dollar.
