Wyatt Earp — Frontier Lawman and Western Legend
Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (1848–1929) became one of the most recognizable figures of the American West.
Born in Illinois, Earp traveled throughout the developing frontier and worked in a variety of occupations before becoming associated with law enforcement. He gained a reputation as a lawman in Dodge City, Kansas, before eventually moving to Tombstone, Arizona Territory.
In Tombstone, Earp served as a deputy sheriff and became involved in the increasingly tense conflict between his family and a group of local men commonly known as the Cowboys.
Then came October 26, 1881.
Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and their friend Doc Holliday confronted several members of the opposing group near the O.K. Corral. The confrontation lasted less than a minute, but it became one of the most famous episodes in the history of the American West. Several men were killed, while Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded.
The event helped transform Wyatt Earp from a frontier lawman into an enduring American legend. His later life took him through several western communities before he eventually settled in California, where he died in 1929.
