1867 Shield Nickel — No Rays — G Obverse / XF Reverse
A historic 1867 U.S. Shield Nickel, also known as a Union Shield Nickel, featuring the Union shield and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the obverse. The reverse displays the large “5 CENTS” denomination surrounded by 13 stars.
This example shows an interesting difference in preservation between the two sides. The obverse is approximately Good (G), with noticeable circulation wear and some loss of the finer shield details. The reverse is approximately Extremely Fine (XF), retaining considerably sharper details in the denomination, lettering, stars, and surrounding design.
The 1867 Shield Nickel is a No Rays variety, with the rays removed from the reverse design that appeared on the earliest Shield Nickels. The 1867 issue is an important early example of this historic U.S. five-cent series.
