1866 Three-Cent Nickel — About Uncirculated (AU)
A historic 1866 Three-Cent Nickel, featuring the Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre. The obverse shows Liberty facing left with “LIBERTY” inscribed on her coronet, surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the date. The reverse displays the Roman numeral “III” within an ornamental wreath.
This example is graded About Uncirculated (AU), showing only light wear on the highest points while retaining strong detail and much of its original surface appearance. The 1866 issue is an interesting early example of the Three-Cent Nickel series, which was struck from 1865 through 1889.
