Description
This ancient Roman coin was struck during the reign of Valens, Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire from AD 364 to 378. It is an AE3 nummus, a bronze denomination issued during the Late Roman Empire.
Valens became emperor after the division of imperial authority with his brother Valentinian I, who governed the Western Roman Empire. Valens was responsible for the administration and defense of the eastern provinces, including prolonged conflicts with the Sasanian Empire and growing tensions along the Danube frontier.
His reign ended dramatically at the Battle of Adrianople in AD 378, where the Roman army suffered one of its greatest defeats and Valens was killed. This event is often considered a major milestone in the decline of Roman power in the West.
