Historical Background:
Valens became emperor in AD 364 when his brother, Valentinian I, divided the administration of the Roman Empire with him. Valentinian governed the western provinces, while Valens ruled the eastern portion.
Valens spent much of his reign dealing with military threats along the empire's borders. One of the most important events of his reign was the Gothic War of AD 376–378, which ended disastrously for the Romans.
In AD 378, Valens confronted the Goths at the Battle of Adrianople. The Roman army suffered a devastating defeat, and Valens was killed during the battle. The defeat is considered one of the major turning points in the later history of the Roman Empire.
The Siscia Mint, located in the Roman province of Pannonia, was an important center for producing Roman coinage during the 4th century.
