This type was issued during the reign of Alexander Jannaeus (Yehonatan), King of Judaea (c. 103–76 BC), of the Hasmonean dynasty. The small bronze denomination, known as a lepton (plural: lepta), was among the lowest-value coins circulating in Judea and would have been used for everyday transactions by ordinary people.
The design typically features an anchor on one side, symbolizing maritime power and royal authority, with a star and surrounding inscription on the other side identifying the Hasmonean ruler. Despite its humble denomination, the coin carries exceptional historical importance due to its connection with the religious and economic life of ancient Judea.
