A remarkable bronze follis from the early Byzantine Empire, issued during the reign of Emperor Justin I (AD 518–527), the predecessor and uncle of the famous emperor Justinian I the Great.
Justin I rose to power after a long military career and his reign marked the beginning of the Justinianic dynasty, one of the most influential periods in Byzantine history. His rule came at a turning point when the Eastern Roman Empire was preparing for major expansion and transformation under Justinian I.
This large bronze follis (40 nummi) features the imperial portrait of Justin I on the obverse. The reverse displays the large and clearly visible "M" denomination mark, representing 40 nummi, along with Byzantine control marks including the star, cross, and "N" markings that are characteristic of the period.
This example exhibits nice surviving details, with a particularly attractive and well-defined reverse design. The clear denomination mark and visible symbols make this coin easy to appreciate and identify.
