The design depicts the "Old Man of the Mountain" — a famous rock formation that served as the state's emblem until its collapse in 2003 — set against a backdrop of mountain peaks and granite outcroppings. The reverse bears New Hampshire's state motto, "Live Free Or Die," along with the state name and the year 1788, when it became the 9th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
The obverse features John Flanagan's classic left-facing portrait of George Washington, adapted from Jean-Antoine Houdon's sculpture, which has appeared on the quarter since 1932.
