1900-S Morgan Silver Dollar — PCGS Genuine XF Details — Cleaned

A fascinating 1900-S Morgan Silver Dollar from the San Francisco Mint, professionally authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS.

This Morgan dollar is a particularly interesting issue because only 3,540,000 examples were struck at the San Francisco Mint, making the 1900-S a lower-mintage Morgan compared with many of the more common Philadelphia issues.

PCGS Certified

This coin has been examined and authenticated by PCGS and is designated:

Grade: Genuine — XF Details (92 — Cleaned)
Date: 1900-S
Denomination: $1 Morgan Silver Dollar
Mint: San Francisco
Mintage: 3,540,000
Certification: PCGS
Condition: Extremely Fine Details — Cleaned

The XF Details designation indicates that the coin retains detail consistent with an Extremely Fine example. PCGS has also identified evidence of cleaning, which is why the coin received a Details designation rather than a conventional numerical grade.

The cleaning should be considered part of the coin's condition, and the coin should not be cleaned or altered further.

A Lower-Mintage San Francisco Morgan

The 1900-S is an appealing date for Morgan dollar collectors because of its relatively low production. Only 3.54 million were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

For comparison, many Morgan dollars from the Philadelphia Mint were produced in quantities many times greater than this. The San Francisco mint mark gives this coin an important place in the Morgan dollar series.

The 1900-S also has a number of recognized die varieties, making the date an interesting area for collectors who enjoy studying Morgan dollar varieties.

About the Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and contains 90% silver and 10% copper. Each Morgan dollar contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounce of silver.

The series was produced from 1878 through 1904 and then again in 1921. Today, Morgan dollars are among the most collected classic American silver coins.
