Offered here is a 1796 Qing Dynasty Jiaqing Tongbao (嘉慶通寶) cash coin, issued during the reign of the Jiaqing Emperor (1796–1820). This coin was struck at the Bao Yuan (寶源) Mint in Beijing, the central mint responsible for producing official Qing copper-alloy cash coinage.
Historical Background
The Jiaqing Emperor, personal name Aisin Gioro Yongyan, became the sixth emperor of the Qing Dynasty. He officially assumed the throne in 1796, following the abdication of his father, the Qianlong Emperor, although the retired Qianlong Emperor continued to exercise significant influence during the early part of Jiaqing's reign.
The Jiaqing period marked an important transition in Qing history. The empire was still one of the world's great powers, but it was beginning to experience increasing financial difficulties, corruption, social unrest, and internal rebellions.
One of the major challenges during Jiaqing's reign was the White Lotus Rebellion (1794–1804), a large-scale uprising that placed considerable pressure on the Qing government and its finances. The government also faced growing problems with corruption and declining state revenues.
About the Coin
The inscription 嘉慶通寶 (Jiaqing Tongbao) translates approximately as “Jiaqing Currency” or “Jiaqing Circulating Treasure.”
The Bao Yuan (寶源) mint was located in Beijing and was one of the most important mints of the Qing monetary system. Qing cash coins were generally cast rather than struck, using molds and traditional Chinese casting techniques.
The coin is made of brass, a copper-zinc alloy commonly used for Qing Dynasty cash coins. The central square hole allowed coins to be carried conveniently on strings, often in groups of 1,000 cash, traditionally referred to as a string of cash.
