Description
This ancient Roman coin was struck during the reign of Theodosius I, Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire from AD 379 to 395. It is an AE4 nummus, a small bronze denomination issued during the final decades of the unified Roman Empire.
Theodosius I came to power during a period of military crisis following the defeat of the Roman army at the Battle of Adrianople in AD 378. He successfully stabilized the eastern provinces and later became the last emperor to rule both the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. After his death in AD 395, the empire was permanently divided between his sons, beginning the separate histories of the Eastern and Western Roman realms.
