A historically significant silvered bronze Antoninianus issued during the reign of Emperor Probus (AD 276–282), one of the capable military emperors of the late 3rd-century Roman Empire. Probus restored stability after a period of civil conflict and successfully defended Rome’s frontiers through numerous military campaigns.
The reverse features the legend CLEMENTIA TEMP (“The Clemency of the Times”), a message promoting imperial mercy, justice, and the restoration of order under Probus’ rule. The design typically depicts the emperor receiving authority from a divine figure, emphasizing the emperor’s role as protector and restorer of the Roman state.
The Antoninianus was the principal silvered bronze denomination of the 3rd century AD, introduced during the reign of Caracalla and continuing through the turbulent era of the soldier emperors. Probus’ issues are especially collected for their strong portraits, varied reverse types, and historical connection to Rome’s recovery before the reforms of Diocletian.
