A fascinating late Roman bronze coin issued for Constantius II during the early part of his career as Caesar under the Constantinian dynasty.
The son of Emperor Constantine the Great, Constantius II was appointed Caesar in AD 324 and later became Augustus in AD 337 following his father's death. He ruled the Eastern Roman Empire for much of his reign and became one of the longest-serving emperors of the 4th century.
This small AE4 reduced billon nummus represents the changing coinage system of the Late Roman Empire. During this period, Roman bronze denominations became increasingly smaller while continuing to carry traditional imperial imagery, military themes, and symbols of Roman authority.
This issue was struck while Constantius II was still Caesar, making it an important piece from the transition period between the reign of Constantine the Great and the later division of imperial power among his sons.
