Historical Background
Marcus Aurelius Claudius, better known as Claudius II Gothicus, was a career military commander who became emperor during one of the most difficult periods in Roman history. The empire was facing invasions, civil wars, political instability, and serious economic problems.
Claudius became emperor in AD 268, following the assassination of Emperor Gallienus. Although his reign lasted only about two years, he quickly gained a reputation as a capable and successful military leader.
His greatest achievement was his victory over the Goths, who had invaded the Roman Balkans in large numbers. Claudius defeated them in the campaign culminating in the Battle of Naissus, one of Rome’s most important victories of the 3rd century. Following this success, he received the honorary title “Gothicus,” meaning “Conqueror of the Goths.”
His coinage reflects the military character of his reign. Many Antoniniani of Claudius II feature the emperor wearing a radiate crown, while the reverse designs often celebrate military victory, Roman strength, or the virtues of the emperor.
The Antoninianus had originally been introduced earlier in the 3rd century as a denomination worth approximately two denarii. By the time of Claudius II, however, the Roman monetary system had undergone significant debasement. These coins were commonly struck in a low-silver billon alloy, making them an important part of the monetary history of the 3rd-century Roman Empire.
Claudius' reign was tragically short. In AD 270, while preparing for further military campaigns, he died during a devastating epidemic that affected the Roman army and population. He was briefly succeeded by his brother Quintillus and then by Aurelian, who would go on to reunite much of the Roman Empire.
