Malaya 10 Cents — 1941, NGC MS 64
A beautiful 1941 Malaya 10 Cents, struck during the reign of King George VI and issued by the Commissioners of Currency, Malaya. This silver coin comes from the final years of British Malaya, making it a particularly interesting piece of colonial and World War II-era history.
The obverse features the crowned portrait of King George VI, facing left, with the inscription “GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA.” The reverse displays the denomination “10 CENTS” within a beaded circle, surrounded by the inscription “COMMISSIONERS OF CURRENCY MALAYA” and the date 1941.
Struck in 75% silver, the coin weighs approximately 2.71 grams and measures about 18 mm in diameter. Approximately 17 million examples were produced for the 1941 issue.
The date 1941 gives this coin special historical significance. It was issued just before the Japanese invasion of Malaya in December 1941, which brought an end to the British colonial monetary system in the region. As a result, this coin represents one of the final issues of pre-occupation British Malaya currency and captures a remarkable moment immediately before the dramatic events of World War II transformed the region.
This example is professionally certified by NGC as MS 64 (Mint State), a strong uncirculated grade with excellent overall preservation, sharp detail, and attractive mint-state surfaces.
According to the NGC population information provided, 278 examples are graded MS 64, with 240 examples graded higher. While the issue itself had a substantial mintage, examples preserved in high Mint State grades are considerably more desirable to collectors.
