A handsome silver drachm struck during the reign of Kumaragupta I, one of the last great rulers of the Gupta Empire, whose reign (AD 415–455) marked the continuation of India's classical "Golden Age." Under Kumaragupta I, the empire enjoyed remarkable political stability, economic prosperity, and flourishing artistic achievement, all of which are reflected in the refined craftsmanship of its coinage.
The silver drachms of Kumaragupta I were issued primarily for circulation in western India and were inspired by the earlier silver coinage of the Western Kshatrapas. While retaining the familiar fabric and style of their predecessors, Gupta issues introduced distinctive imperial iconography and legends, symbolizing the transfer of power to the Gupta dynasty following its conquest of the region.
The obverse typically features a stylized bust of the king in profile wearing royal attire, reflecting both local and foreign artistic influences that had become established in western Indian numismatics. The reverse usually depicts a peacock with spread or folded tail, accompanied by a legend in Brahmi script. The peacock served as an important dynastic and religious symbol, associated with Kartikeya (Skanda), the Hindu god of war, and may also allude to the emperor's own name, Kumaragupta ("protected by Kumara," another name for Kartikeya).
