An authentic ancient Roman bronze coin struck during the reign of Emperor Gratian, who ruled the Roman Empire from 367 to 375 AD.

Gratian became emperor at a remarkably young age, being elevated to the imperial position in 367 AD at only about eight years old. He later became an important ruler during a period when the Roman Empire was facing significant military and political challenges.

His coinage is particularly interesting because it belongs to the late Roman period, when the empire was undergoing major changes in religion, politics and military organization.

Typical AE3 coins of Gratian feature a portrait of the emperor on the obverse with a Latin inscription naming and honoring him. Reverse designs vary by issue and can include figures such as Victory or representations connected with the Roman army and imperial authority.

Historical Background

Gratian was the son of Emperor Valentinian I. He ruled the western portion of the Roman Empire while his uncle Valens governed the East. During Gratian's reign, the Roman world experienced growing pressure along its frontiers, including major conflicts involving the Goths.

Gratian is also remembered for his support of Nicene Christianity and for policies that reduced some of the traditional privileges of pagan Roman religion.
