The MS70 & First Day of Issue (FDI) Designations

• MS70 (Perfect Mint State): This is the highest possible grade for a coin, signifying a flawless example with no visible imperfections, even under 5x magnification. The PCGS Population Report shows there are 0 coins graded higher than MS70, and 2,729 examples graded lower .

• First Day of Issue (FDI): This label certifies that the coin was among the very first shipped from the U.S. Mint and was submitted to PCGS for grading on its day of release . This designation is particularly rare for the 2017 Philadelphia issue because the Mint did not publicly confirm the existence of Philadelphia-struck coins until well after the FDI submission deadline . PCGS limits the FDI designation to coins that can be conclusively proven to be from those initial shipments .

The Philadelphia Mint Variety

Unlike typical bullion Silver Eagles which are struck at West Point, the 2017 issue was also produced at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints . The 2017-P Silver Eagle has a mintage of approximately 1 million coins , making it the rarest of the three varieties and a significant find for collectors. Because bullion Silver Eagles are not struck with a mint mark, their origin can only be identified by specific serial numbers on their 500-coin "monster boxes" .

The Type 1 Design

This coin features the Type 1 design, which was used on the Silver Eagle from its introduction in 1986 until it was replaced in 2021 .

• Obverse: Adolph A. Weinman's iconic "Walking Liberty" design, showing Lady Liberty draped in the American flag, striding toward a rising sun with branches of laurel and oak in her arm .

• Reverse: John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design, depicting a bald eagle behind a shield, clutching an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left, with 13 stars above representing the original colonies .
