Hickok arrived in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, in July 1876, just weeks before his death. On August 2, 1876, he was playing poker at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon when he was shot from behind by Jack McCall. The poker hand he was reportedly holding — two black aces and two black eights — became famous as the "Dead Man's Hand."
His short but remarkable life helped make Deadwood and the American frontier part of the enduring story of the Old West.
