Santo Domingo 4 Maravedís (1544-1564) – Charles & Joanna – VF35

An authentic Spanish Colonial copper coin struck at the historic Santo Domingo Mint, the first official mint established in the Americas. Issued during the reign of Charles I of Spain (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) in the name of Charles and his mother, Queen Joanna, this coin represents the earliest period of European coinage produced in the New World.

The Santo Domingo Mint supplied coinage for Spain's expanding colonies in the Caribbean and the Americas during the sixteenth century. These coins circulated throughout the Spanish Empire and played an important role in the economic development of the New World.

Graded VF35 (Very Fine), this example displays well-defined details and pleasing overall preservation for an issue that circulated nearly five centuries ago.
